What does a landscape operative do?

In a job as a landscaping operative, you will be responsible for many general horticultural duties. Some roles may be related specifically to soft landscaping, while some may also involve hard landscaping tasks.

Soft landscaping duties a landscape operative might do include:

    • • Turfing and lawn installation
    • • Preparing ground for planting
    • • Planting – plants, shrubs and trees
    • • Mulching
    • • Pruning and trimming
    • • General plant care and horticultural tasks


Hard landscaping duties can include building, repairs and maintenance of:

    • • Decking
    • • Paving
    • • Patios
    • • Fencing
    • • Brick work
    • • Water features including irrigation
    • • Ground works / Sub-bases
    • • Drainage systems
    • • Steps
    • • Artificial grass


What qualifications, skills and experience do I need to be a landscape operative?

Depending on the nature of the role, some experience in landscape or garden maintenance is usually required for landscaping operative jobs. Most employers will require you to have a genuine interest and knowledge of horticulture and plant maintenance practices, including knowing how to safely use tools and machinery.

Most landscape operative jobs require you to have a valid UK driving licence and for some positions, a specific digger, dumper or tractor licence is also an advantage. In addition, a CSCS card is always desirable and PA1/PA6 qualifications are preferred requirements.


Where can you work as a landscape operative?

Working as a landscape operative can take you to different locations. You might be working in a public park, landscaping around commercial buildings or new build housing or for private homes and gardens.
